Vineyards: Quail Hill Vineyard

Originally planted in 1971, our Quail Hill Vineyard 47-acre estate has some of the oldest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines planted in the Russian River Valley. Long recognized as a gem in the region, the vineyard possesses superb qualities for growing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The combination of the estate's location, soil composition, long and cool growing season, dramatic elevation changes, and clone and rootstock selections make this a prized vineyard.

When a vineyard is planted, a winemaking and vineyard team takes into account many variables including the site's elevation changes, soil, sun exposure, and growing conditions. The team then chooses various rootstocks, clones or selections, trellising and pruning systems, irrigation, vine spacing and direction that best match the vineyard site's attributes. The Lynmar vineyard and winery team, comprised of Winemaker Hugh Chappelle, long-time friend and colleague Consulting Viticulturist Greg Adams, Consulting Winemaker Paul Hobbs and Vineyard Manager James McGarry, combine their knowledge and understanding of vineyard and winery management to make the best decisions for Quail Hill Vineyard. A phased-replanting program of 71% of the vineyard, began in 1996 and was completed in 2005. This replanting is a result of a better understanding of the site and the optimal clones and rootstocks available to us.
